    A27 Feasibility Study Publication

We welcome the publication, by the Government, of the A27 Corridor Feasibility Study.  It is important that everyone is able to access and understand the work that was completed last year.  We are currently considering the Study and its findings.

West Sussex County Council, as part of A27 Action, helped inform the Department for Transport’s work through participation in its Reference Group alongside other stakeholders.

A27 Action received submissions regarding the need to improve the A27 from businesses, residents and local parish councils.  Ministers were receptive to this engagement and the views expressed in a coherent way for the Department to take account of.

The Government took on board all of the views received.  We thank Ministers for taking the time to visit the County and for listening to the concerns and suggestions for improvements.

The Feasibility Study has identified improvement options.  The detail in the Feasibility Study sets out the Department for Transport’s conclusions in accordance with its standard transport appraisal techniques.

These options will now be subject to more detailed technical work to ensure they will achieve the Government’s objectives.

We recognise there is a lot of detail to consider but we are committed to involving residents, businesses, Borough and District Councils and the Local Enterprise Partnership.

The study sets out that further work is required on the detail of the most feasible options.  Once this has been completed, those options will be published for formal consultation.

We will ensure that the consultation will invite views in relation to sustainable transport measures to complement investment along the A27.

West Sussex County Council looks forward to working with all stakeholders, particularly Highways England, in investing in the strategic road network in the County.

We welcome the Government’s Study as part of the long-term economic plan to boost investment in the strategic road network.

The Government’s commitment helps to ensure that a strong and diverse economy can grow in West Sussex

The feasibility study published by the Government is set out in a series of technical reports is currently available here - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/a27-corridor-feasibility-study-technical-reports

Further Success at Wickers Gymnastics Club

Wickers Gymnastics Club has had a brilliant year with the building of the foam landing pit, the Annual Club Championships, Wickers Invitational, 2014 Awards Evening and the success of our Squad gymnasts.

Wickers has accomplished great success during this year’s competition season. The season kicked off with the Woman’s Artistic Regional Championships held on the 19th and 20th of September2014.  Though very tough competition the girls did fantastically well, and the Wickers gymnasts managed to get a 5th place in their Modified level 3 group as well as their prep 6 girls who are only 7 years old grabbing 3rd place Team winners.

Chichester Floor and Vault competition held on the 28th of September for General Gymnastics squads was next up on the list. For some gymnasts this was their first competition and they all held their nerve and performed exceptionally well, winning over 30 medals!

On the 4th of October 2014 both Woman’s Artistic and higher level General Gymnastics squads were entered into the Sussex Championships. Wickers came out victorious with Four Sussex Champions. A massive well done to Lottie Barton who won a trophy for the highest general floor score of the day.

On the 19th of October it was the General Gymnasts turn to compete in the Regional Championships. Wickers entered 13 gymnasts, all gymnasts received top ten places and 9 received medals for top 3 places in their age groups and competitive level.

The final competition for the year was the Southbourne Beam and Vault Championships for Woman’s Artistic and General Gymnastics. This was held on the 23rd of November 2014 and as usual everyone had performed brilliantly. Wickers won almost every category they entered and managed to receive a total of 32 medals, 14 Gold, 11 Silver and 7 Bronze.

Katy Hodgson commented ‘We are extremely proud of all of our gymnasts, those who competed for the very first time, those who keep achieving every year and those who do it for fun and keep improving. We would like to thank the coaches, volunteers and parents who make it all happen and would like everyone at Wickers to keep up the hard work.   We are looking forward to another successful year in 2015, and all that it may bring!’

Wickers also has an Adult Gymnastics group, who train on Thursday and Sunday mornings and are very excited to be hosting their first in-house competition on the 21st of December. Good luck to everyone competing at this Christmas Competition.

What’s it all FORS ? Sussex Transport Are Awarded the SILVER Accreditation!

The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) is an accreditation scheme that aims to improve fleet activity in London and throughout the UK and beyond.

As a FORS accredited company, not only are we now recognised as a forward-thinking operator, but accreditation will give us that all important competitive edge. FORS is graduated into three levels enabling companies to demonstrate to customers and other companies, progress through the FORS journey.

According to the FORS website, ‘’Silver and gold FORS accredited companies are high-quality operators that are committed to becoming safer, greener and more efficient. Gold is the highest FORS award, followed by silver and then bronze. To progress an operator must meet all the requirements of lower awards. Progression to silver or gold accreditation is not mandatory but may help complying with more rigorous procurement conditions. Silver requirements are based primarily around putting in place the systems for improvements, and gold requirements primarily involve enacting those improvements. Silver and gold FORS operators shall provide an annual submission of data to their certification body for review. Variations in approach to a requirement are acceptable provided that they meet its general ethos and are agreed with the certification body’’

We are very proud of our progression from Bronze to Silver today.

Last month four members from Lancing Business Park spoke to Sir Robert Woodard Academy students about their different careers and career journeys.

Sir Robert Woodard Academy (SRWA) recently asked if any member from Lancing Business Park would like to come in to the academy to speak to our students regarding their current career and their career journey.  SRWA feel it is important to ask people from the local community as they have a greater understanding of the realities of employment on offer within the area.

    They were as follows;

Martin Osmond - Mobility, Martin spoke about the importance of planning and
preparation and how this applies at an early age, he was able to give clear
examples of how he had demonstrated this in the past.

Elaine Smith  - Bennett-Griffin Smith, Elaine spoke about her time at school
and the route she had taken which had led her to her current career, which
is a partner in a solicitors practice.  Elaine was very honest about her
journey and dispelled many myths the students had regarding solicitors.

Alan Tucker - Core Cleaning, Alan had a planned career but due to an
accident he had to change his career, he spoke of how he started his own
business.  Alan showed that with hard work and determination you are able to
    achieve your desired goal.

    Jenny Guy - Sussex Transport,
Jenny works in HR, she was able to stress to
the students the importance of what an employer is looking for, she spoke
about CV's, how to prepare for interviews.  Jenny shared with the students
the different roles she had prior to her current position.

All of the people who came in to speak to the students all had one common
theme and that is, they have all had different careers before working in
their current roles and all of them said they had wished they had worked
    harder at school.

The majority of students plan or speak of one career, they do not realise
that they may have numerous roles before they eventually work in a specific
area.  Students also need to take into consideration that the job they may
eventually end up working in, may not yet be invented. By local employers
coming in and speaking to the students we hope to raise students awareness
and expose the realities of what they may have to encounter once they have
    left here.

SRWA would like to thank everyone who came in and spoke to the students, it
was a daunting experience for them, in the respect that the talks took place
first thing in the morning to a group of 30 students whose ages range from
11 - 18.  Saying this, even though the students may not be interested in any
of the careers, it gives them an understanding of what is required of them,
no matter what career path they choose to pursue.

If anyone would like to share their experiences with the students, SRWA would
be most grateful for your time, if you are available from 8:50 - 9:10 on a
Monday, Tuesday or Thursday, please can you contact me
    amorley@srwa.woodard.co.uk

A HAULAGE and warehousing firm and its ‘young achiever’ are hoping to scoop an Adur and Worthing Business Awards double later this year.

Sussex Transport, at Lancing Business Park, and employee Sian Panton, have been nominated in the medium business and young achiever categories.

Over the past year, the business has grown significantly, nearly doubling the amount of staff and increasing its turnover, thanks to some major supplier agreements.

Managing director Damian Pulford said: “Our aim is complete customer satisfaction – we listen to what our customer wants and then we deliver the service they require.

“We are investing in new vehicles, staff training and updated computer systems to ensure we can compete in the very busy and ever-changing world of transport and warehousing.

“We invest in our people and respect their input and ideas - we reward ideas, sales leads and initiative.”

The firm’s expanding fleet travels the length and breadth of the country – and occasionally overseas – storing and delivering goods from its Lancing base.

It has delivered to Wembley, Wimbledon, Glastonbury and even Buckingham Palace but also remains keen on helping local businesses with their transport needs.

HR manager Jenny Guy said: “I am proud to work for Sussex Transport and really think it’s about time the company was recognised in the community for the great work and high standards we provide locally and nationally.”

Jenny nominated her colleague, Sian, for the young achiever award, after impressing with her knowledge and enthusiasm.

Sian designed and implemented a new handbook for all current and new members of staff and helping secure a number of awards for the firm.

Jenny said: “Sian is like a breath of fresh air at Sussex Transport.

“With a wealth of enthusiasm and knowledge she has put into place procedures and policies which have brought us bang up to date with how to run a modern fleet of lorries and associated staff.

“Sian joined Sussex Transport 18 months ago and since then has been inspirational in her dedication and commitment – often taking phone calls through the night to ensure a job is completed to clients’ satisfaction.”

Sian said she was ‘overwhelmed’ to be nominated and added it was pleasing to be recognised by her peers.
