There has been a recent increase in the use of corrosive substances such as acids and alkalis being used to  attack victims.  A substance could be in its original container or decanted into another to disguise it and/or weaponise it. The most common containers used to disguise are squeeze bottles, particularly Lucozade or Fruit Shoot plastic bottles, but many other types of container have been used.

Please share the following with colleagues, centre management, security staff etc.

    General Advice

    • Wear gloves and eye protection
    •
    • Ensure the emergency services have been called
    •
    • Avoid getting contaminated
    •
    • Do not conduct sniff tests of bottles
    •
    • Request suspect bottles be placed on ground prior to approach
    •
    • If attacked, use hands to cover your face and eyes
    •

    First Aid

    • Ensure own safety by wearing two pairs of nitrile gloves and, if available, goggles to prevent contamination of the first aider
    •
    • Flush the affected area with water for 20 minutes ensuring the chemicals are being washed away from the area, and not onto other areas of the body or pooling
    •
    • Remove contaminated clothing as soon as possible, being careful not to contaminate other areas unless the clothing is stuck. Do not pull stuck clothing -- pour the water over it. Remove jewellery if possible
    •
    • Dressings or burns dressings should not be applied until the area has been flushed for the twenty minutes, after which time they can be applied if medical help has not arrived
    •
    • If the incident affects the eyes the minimum flushing time is ten minutes – up to 20 minutes – if the person cannot open their eyes the first aider should try and open the eyes for them if this can be done safely. It is important when flushing eyes to ensure the contamination is not spread to the other eye by positioning the person appropriately

Greater Brighton building a bright new future for the construction trade

The next generation of construction workers are set for a bright future thanks to the work of the Greater Brighton Economic Board (GBEB).

Electricians, plumbers, carpenters, decorators and plasterers are among the trades to be taught at the new £9 million Trades and Construction Centre in east Brighton.

The building has been made possible by local growth deal funding, secured by Greater Brighton through the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership, as part of a drive to boost skills in the wider area.

Ahead of the hub being opened to students in September, GBEB chairman Dan Humphreys was given a tour of the site in Wilson Avenue by Nick Juba, CEO of Greater Brighton Metropolitan College (the MET).

Speaking after the visit, Cllr Humphreys, who is also leader of Worthing Borough Council, said:

“Greater Brighton was formed three years ago as local authorities, businesses and education providers realised we could do more by working together.

“We want to combine our skills and resources to boost the local economy, boost jobs, boost productivity and boost quality of life for people living across the region.

“This amazing new centre is a perfect example of what difference Greater Brighton can make, giving people the skills to thrive in the 21st century economy.”

The centre is just one of a number of projects which has received support from the GBEB.

Cllr Humphreys heard how trades were previously taught on three different sites at City College Brighton & Hove before the further education college merged with Northbrook in Worthing and Shoreham to form the MET.

The £9 million of funding secured from the LEP allowed the construction of a new hub in east Brighton to expand the college’s courses in construction and trades.

The hub will be a base for 500 students a year across the Greater Brighton area, which stretches from Worthing across to Newhaven, Brighton up to East Grinstead. Students and apprentices from Worthing will continue to be able to access local construction courses at other MET campuses in the Greater Brighton region.

External construction work was completed in April, a week ahead of schedule.

Those at the college are now working with students and staff to develop a kit list to ensure it is fully kitted out in time for the new autumn intake.

Cllr Humphreys also heard how the development was one that was literally created in the Greater Brighton region: Sussex-based HNW Architects designed the new building, while property consultancy practice NorthGates, which work from an office just outside Shoreham, oversaw the project management.

Mr Juba, CEO of the MET, said:

“I want to say thank you to the Greater Brighton Economic Board and the local enterprise partnership for all their support.

“I am a board member of both and being involved in both of those organisations has given the MET a chance to thrive while thinking about how we organise our courses and provision to support local communities

“That investment that both organisations have made in this facility is very much appreciated and I know our students will be saying the same thing.”

‘FORGET THE NORTHERN POWERHOUSE, GIVE US THE SOUTHERN ACCELERATOR’

The Greater Brighton Economic Board (GBEB) met on Tuesday April 25, 2017, to discuss a packed agenda focused on bringing more investment into the region, which extends from Worthing in the west across to Newhaven and up to East Grinstead. After overseeing his last meeting as GBEB Chairman, Councillor Daniel Humphreys, shares his personal reflection on the progress that’s being made

You've probably heard of the Northern Powerhouse. You may have heard of the Midlands Engine. But very soon I expect you will also know more about the Southern Accelerator.

This is the banner under which the Greater Brighton Economic Board hopes to drive growth throughout our areas.

The term has been universally supported within the Board’s response to the Government's Industrial Strategy.

The idea is simple - using our power as civic, education and business leaders to focus our energy to propel the region forward.

This was my last meeting as Chairman of the Board. In the last 12 months I have seen first-hand the impact that a joined-up approach can deliver.

From Worthing to Newhaven, Brighton up to East Grinstead, across the region we already have so many of the ingredients needed for an economy that delivers better outcomes for everyone.

We have a highly qualified workforce, we have the will from leaders, and we are very well connected.

What we need now is to put the foot on the accelerator to enable us to compete alongside the likes of London on a national and international stage.

The timing for jump-starting our economy has never been better. The regional economy is strong. Business growth rates are improving. Plus the government is willing to give the provinces more power and, more importantly, funding to deliver real change.

Investment in housing, transport and supporting further and higher education could make all the difference to the region as a whole, especially if we brand it under a single banner.

That's why I'm delighted to say that Whitehall officials are already showing an interest in the idea and are willing to visit to find out more to take the proposal forward.

It is yet another example of how Greater Brighton is making great strides in such a short space of time.

Recent months has seen the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership provide over £58 million towards infrastructure and regeneration in Greater Brighton.

This includes projects such as building office space at Adur Civic centre to keep 400 jobs in the area; transport and roads improvements in the Burgess Hill area; and funding towards delivering a new £99 million Life Sciences building at the University of Sussex’s Falmer campus.

In time these schemes, and others, will unlock hundreds of thousands of square metres of employment and housing space, creating jobs, homes and business space for those in our communities.

We are also seeing some major projects come to conclusion. Building work on the Construction Trades Centre at The GB Met further education college in east Brighton is now complete; while the tidal walls scheme at Shoreham and flood alleviation scheme at Newhaven are moving along quickly.

Greater Brighton is also getting bigger, Crawley Borough Council and Gatwick Airport Ltd will be invited to join the board.  With their co-operation we can strengthen the existing growth corridor from the coast up to the fringes of the capital.

It means we able to pull in more investment and focus on key infrastructure needs, such as increasing capacity on the Brighton mainline, which is the cause of so much misery to thousands of commuters in our area.

And finally, it would only be right to say a massive congratulations to Brighton and Hove Albion for their promotion to the Premier League.

The Seagulls, in some ways, represent everything that’s good about Greater Brighton - working together across traditional district boundaries to deliver places for our wider communities to thrive while showcasing all that is good on the national stage.

The Albion's reach extends to the Greater Brighton's boundary and beyond. The fantastic stadium complex at Falmer straddles parts of Brighton & Hove and Lewes; the state-of-the-art training ground is in Adur; not forgetting that fans flock from every corner of the county to watch Chris Hughton's team in action.

With the club now competing on the elite stage, it's a chance to put our region on the national and global map.

It will be a privilege to be part of the civic parade through Brighton and Hove on May 14 to celebrate with all the Seagulls fans.
